2024 Confirmed as Hottest Year on Record: First Full Calendar Year Above 1.5°C Pre-Industrial
2024 shattered every previous global temperature record, averaging between 1.46°C and 1.62°C above the 1850–1900 pre-industrial baseline depending on dataset — the first calendar year in the instrumental record to average above 1.5°C. All five major international temperature-monitoring agencies (NASA, NOAA, Copernicus, WMO, and Berkeley Earth) issued coordinated headline confirmations. The sustained warmth was driven by a combination of long-term anthropogenic warming and a strong El Niño event. Though a single year above 1.5°C does not violate the Paris Agreement's long-term 30-year average target, it marks a major monitoring milestone in climate science.
