AI Coding Tool Adoption Passes 80% in 2025 — But Developer Trust Lags Far Behind
Three independent developer surveys — Stack Overflow (49,000+ respondents), JetBrains (24,534 respondents), and GitLab's DevSecOps study (3,266 professionals) — all found that more than 80% of developers use or plan to use AI coding tools as of 2025. Yet despite near-universal adoption intent, fewer than 40% of developers trust AI-generated output without human review across all three surveys. The surveys span different populations and methodologies, explaining the prominence spread, and collectively show AI coding tools have crossed a majority-adoption threshold while a significant trust gap persists.

- GitHub Copilot crossed 20 million all-time users in July 2025 — a 33% gain in three months — with the tool now generating 46% of code written by developers on the platform
