Battery Boom: U.S. Grid Storage Surged 66% in 2024, Reaching 26 GW
U.S. utility-scale battery storage capacity grew 66% in 2024, with generators adding 10.4 GW of new capacity to bring the total past 26 GW — the second-largest capacity addition of any fuel type that year, behind only solar. The EIA confirmed this milestone in its Preliminary Monthly Electric Generator Inventory, corroborated by the independent Wood Mackenzie / ACP US Energy Storage Monitor, which tracked 12.3 GW added across all segments. California and Texas accounted for 61% of new installations. Looking forward, operators have filed plans to add 19.6 GW of battery storage in 2025 alone, which would set another annual record.
