Enterprise Generative AI Adoption for 2025 Splits 34% to 95% Depending on Definition
Ask what share of enterprises use generative AI and the answer ranges from 34% to 95%, depending entirely on the bar for adoption. Self-report surveys that count any regular use in a single business function put the figure near 88-95% (McKinsey, Bain), while a survey measuring weekly habitual use among enterprise leaders lands at 82% (Wharton), and metrics requiring deep organizational transformation or actual paid spend land at just 34-35% (Deloitte, Ramp). All five trackers surveyed in 2025, so the spread is not a timing artifact -- it is a definitional one, and this raw log entry surfaces that gap rather than resolving it.
Findings
- McKinsey's July 2025 global survey (n=1,993 respondents across 105 countries) found 88% of organizations "regularly using AI in at least one business function," up from 78% a year earlier.
- Bain's December 2024 US survey (n=199) found 95% of US companies using generative AI in some capacity, up 12 points from 83% in October 2023 -- the highest figure among the five trackers compared here.
- Wharton's WHAIR/GBK Collective 2025 AI Adoption Report, a third annual cross-sectional study, found 82% of enterprise leaders use generative AI at least weekly and 46% daily, both up more than 10 points from 2024.
- Deloitte's global State of AI in the Enterprise survey (n=3,235 leaders across 24 countries, fielded August-September 2025) found only 34% of organizations are using AI to "deeply transform" products, processes, or business models -- and Ramp's transaction-data-based AI Index, drawn from 70,000+ businesses' actual card and invoice spend, put paid AI adoption at just 35% of US businesses as of March 2025, less than half the McKinsey and Bain figures.
