Global Air Travel Hit a 2025 Record -- IATA and ACI World Split By Nearly 2x on the Total
IATA and ICAO both confirm 2025 was the first year global airline passenger counts crossed 5 billion, up roughly 6.7% over 2024. ACI World's separate airport-traffic count put 2025 passenger movements at 9.8 billion -- almost double the airline figure. Both numbers are legitimate records; they measure different things -- passengers carried by airlines versus passenger movements through airports, which double-counts transfers and counts both legs of every trip.
Findings

- ACI World's July 2026 World Airport Traffic Dataset measured 2025 differently, counting 9.8 billion passenger movements across the world's airports, up 3.7% over 2024 -- nearly double the IATA/ICAO airline total because airport counts include both the origin and destination leg of every trip plus connecting transfers.
- All three trackers agree 2025 set a record for air travel by their own methodology, but none of the three counts is directly substitutable for another -- a reminder that 'record year' aviation headlines can describe airline passengers, airport movements, or RPK demand, three different denominators.
