Global Battery Storage Hit a 2025 Record -- Trackers Split Between 106 and 112 GW
IEA, BloombergNEF, and Wood Mackenzie all confirm 2025 was a record year for grid-scale battery storage, with worldwide additions crossing 100 GW for the first time. But the three trackers land on different totals -- 106, 108, and 112 GW -- a reminder that even a clear consensus on direction can still carry real measurement disagreement on magnitude.
Findings
- IEA counted 108 GW of new battery storage capacity worldwide in 2025, a 40% increase over 2024, with utility-scale projects accounting for 87 GW of the total.
- BloombergNEF put 2025 additions at 112 GW (307 GWh) excluding pumped hydro, a 48% year-over-year jump and the first year global deployment topped 100 GW.
- Wood Mackenzie measured 106 GW of new capacity in 2025, up from 73 GW in 2024 -- a 43% year-over-year increase.
- China dominated builds across all three trackers, accounting for roughly 55-63 GW (about half to three-fifths of the global total), with the US a distant second at close to 19 GW.
