Global Carbon Capture Capacity for 2025 Splits Between 50 and 91 Million Tonnes Across Trackers

Global operational carbon capture and storage (CCS) capacity is one of the decarbonization sector's most closely watched numbers -- and its most closely watched trackers do not agree on it. The Global CCS Institute's flagship October 2025 status report counted 77 operational facilities storing 64 million tonnes of CO2 per year, a 54% jump from the prior year. The IEA's CCUS Projects Database, also updated in 2025, put operational capacity at just over 50 million tonnes as of Q1 2025 -- 22% lower. A Rystad Energy-sourced count reported 55 million tonnes across 53 projects in 2024, while Wood Mackenzie's mid-2026 forecast update cited current capacity at roughly 91 million tonnes, nearly double the IEA figure.
