Global Esports Viewership Hit a Record in 2025 -- Trackers Split Between 2.7 and 3.3 Billion Hours
Esports viewership set a new high in 2025, but the two most-cited analytics firms disagree sharply on the scale. Esports Charts, which excludes mainland China, reported 3.3 billion hours watched industry-wide, up 1.5% year-over-year on a 33% jump in Counter-Strike viewership. Stream Hatchet, tracking roughly 1,900 events across 16 platforms, counted 2.7 billion hours for the same year -- a gap of about 600 million hours, or 22% of the smaller figure. Neither firm publishes a platform-by-platform reconciliation, so the spread likely reflects methodology and scope differences rather than a real swing in audience behavior.
Findings
- Esports Charts recorded 3.3 billion global esports hours watched in 2025 (excluding mainland China), up 1.5% year-over-year, with Counter-Strike hours up 33%.
- Stream Hatchet recorded 2.7 billion global esports hours watched in 2025 across roughly 1,900 tracked events on 16 platforms -- about 600 million hours, or 22%, below Esports Charts total.
- Both trackers agree co-streaming and creator-led broadcasts, not official channels alone, now drive a majority of esports viewing -- Stream Hatchet puts co-streaming at 52.9% of its 2.7B-hour total.
- Neither firm publishes a platform-by-platform reconciliation, so the roughly 600-million-hour gap cannot currently be attributed to a specific methodology difference such as co-stream counting, regional inclusion, or event-list scope.
