Global EV Sales Reached 17.1 Million Units in 2024, Crossing 20% of New Car Sales Worldwide
Four independent research organizations — IEA, Rho Motion, BloombergNEF, and Canalys — confirm that global battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle sales reached 17.1 million units in 2024, a 25% year-over-year increase and the fifth consecutive annual record. For the first time, EVs exceeded 20% of all new passenger car sales globally. China accounted for roughly 65% of the global total while Europe contracted 3% as subsidies faded, and North America grew 9% to 1.8 million units.
