U.S. Solar Sets a Two-Decade Record in 2024: 50 GW Installed in a Single Year
The U.S. solar industry installed a record-breaking 50 GW of new capacity in 2024 — the largest single-year addition of any energy technology in more than 20 years, according to a joint SEIA and Wood Mackenzie report. Solar alone accounted for 66% of all new U.S. electric generating capacity added, with solar and battery storage together reaching 84%. Despite broad agreement that 2024 was a landmark year, reported totals vary: SEIA and Wood Mackenzie count 50 GWdc while IEA-PVPS records 47.1 GW, a gap driven by AC vs. DC measurement conventions and differing coverage of distributed vs. utility-scale solar.
