Energy: U.S. Solar Led All Sources in 2024 Capacity Additions

In 2024, utility-scale solar power added more new generating capacity than any other energy source in the United States — a record-breaking year confirmed by all major monitoring bodies. Government data from FERC and the EIA, independent research from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and SEIA industry analysis place utility-scale solar additions between 30 GW (AC nameplate) and 41 GW (DC nameplate), dwarfing wind at 3.1 GW and natural gas at 2.4 GW. Sources agree on the direction but differ in how prominently they feature the finding: trade groups headline it as a generational milestone, while federal regulators record it as one data series among many.
