Energy: INDETERMINATE — industry and government sources diverge on how to count U.S. solar's record 2024 growth

The claim: U.S. solar power installations in 2024 reached approximately 50 GW of new capacity, accounting for 66% of all new electricity-generating capacity added to the U.S. grid. The Delta Engine compared five independent sources — ranging from the Solar Energy Industries Association and Wood Mackenzie (the primary data producers) to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (which uses a utility-scale-only methodology). Despite unanimous agreement that 2024 was a record year for solar, the sources diverge sharply in framing and methodology, producing deltaFinal = 0.337 — INDETERMINATE. The EIA's utility-scale measurement (31 GW) and SEIA's all-segments count (50 GW) are not contradictory, but they measure different things — a distinction most headlines collapse.

Findings

  • SEIA and Wood Mackenzie report ~50 GW of total solar capacity added in 2024 (all segments: utility, commercial, residential); EIA measures only utility-scale additions at ~31 GW — both numbers are correct but incomparable.
