Enterprise AI Adoption: 2025 Surveys Land Anywhere From 45% to 95%
Ask what share of companies use AI in 2025 and the answer swings by 50 points depending on who is asked and what counts as adoption. Bain & Company's periodic tech survey found 95% of U.S. companies report using generative AI (Dec. 2024, n=199, up from 83% in Oct. 2023). McKinsey's global State of AI survey found 88% of organizations report regular AI use in at least one business function (fielded June 25-July 29, 2025; n=1,993 across 105 countries). Knowledge at Wharton's 2025 AI Adoption Report found 82% of enterprise leaders use generative AI weekly (Oct. 2025; n=800 U.S. companies with 0M+ revenue). Ramp's AI Index, tracking paid AI subscriptions across its own U.S. small-and-midsize business customer base, found adoption flat at 45% as of Nov. 2025. All four track the same underlying trend upward, but none share a common denominator or threshold for what counts as adoption.
claim: Independent 2025 surveys put the share of U.S. companies using generative AI anywhere from 45% to 95%, depending entirely on how each survey defines and measures adoption

Findings
- Bain & Company's tech survey found 95% of U.S. companies report using generative AI as of December 2024, up 12 points from 83% in October 2023 (n=199 companies).
- McKinsey's State of AI: Global Survey 2025 (fielded June 25-July 29, 2025; n=1,993 respondents across 105 countries) found 88% report regular AI use in at least one business function, up from 78% a year earlier.
- Knowledge at Wharton's 2025 AI Adoption Report (October 2025; n=800 U.S. companies with revenue over $50 million) found 82% of enterprise leaders now use generative AI weekly, and 46% use it daily.
- Ramp's AI Index, which measures the share of its own U.S. small-and-midsize business customer base holding a paid subscription to an AI model or platform, found adoption flat at 45% as of November 2025 after months of faster growth.
- The four figures do not describe the same population or threshold: global respondents' self-reported functional use (McKinsey), large U.S. firm leaders' weekly habit (Wharton), a smaller panel's yes/no usage claim (Bain), and one vendor's own paying customers (Ramp) are four different denominators, not four measurements of one number.
A vendor sizing a market, a board member evaluating a CEO's AI claims, or a journalist citing an adoption percentage needs to know which definition is doing the work -- a single number quoted without its survey's methodology overstates the precision that actually exists.
